Reef Ball construction and deployment in the St. Lucie River by the River Kidz. Reef Balls (www.reefball.org) are artificial reef modules that create habitat for fish, crabs, oysters and many other species. On June 9, 2012 the River Kidz and their parents (27 volunteers total) built Reef Balls at Florida Oceanographic Society and then deployed them at Riverwalk in downtown Stuart. This work continues the collaborative shoreline restoration project between FOS and Martin County. Ben D'Avanzo of Enviro-Force coordinates the River Reef Project, providing instruction on building the Reef Balls and recruitment of school groups.
